Review:
First off, Fighting Street is actually the
infamous Street Fighter 1 that everyone asked about. Street Fighter was
in the arcades back in 1987 and Hudson Soft brought this as a launch
title for the TurboGrafx-CD in 1989. The name change to "Fighting
Street" is a mystery to me; it certainly didn't make this game
better. The only original characters that are recognizable are
Ryu (that would be you), Ken, and Sagat, the final boss. You can't
choose a character in single player mode so I hope you enjoy playing as
Ryu. In 2-player mode, Ken is, by default player 2.
You are offered one of four opponent
choices when you begin the
game: Japan, China, USA and England. The graphics, as you can tell from
the screen shots, look fair to average for this era. The backgrounds
are mediocre and uninspiring. The characters move in very choppy
motions which result in horrible play control. Also, this CD title was
made before 6-button controllers and you have to try your best with
only Button I and II. I was able to do Ryu's "Haduken" move one time
after countless attempts. Ryu will jump and punch or kick about 1/2
second after execution which is annoying. The different strength
punches and kicks (ie. Fierce) are accomplished by holding the buttons
down - the longer you hold punch down the stronger the punch will
be. The music is the only good part of this game and you can
definitely tell it's on CD. I really enjoyed listening to the tracks :)
Unfortunately, the sound effects are really bad; they sound fake, dull,
and muffled. I do not recommend this game to anyone who enjoys anything
from the fighting genre. Check out the sequel on the TurboGrafx
HuCard Street Fighter II. It was only released in Japan but it's an
enormous improvement over the original. I have never seen such a
dramatic improvement on a sequel in any video game in my entire gaming
life! Pick this one up for the nostalgia or for a collection, but don't
expect to have any actual fun playing Fighting Street--unless you enjoy
choppy, slow-paced, graphically challenged fighters :)
Graphics
- 3/10
Below average graphics with fair looking backgrounds. Nothing to write
home to Mom about.
Music/Sound
- 6/10
The music track is actually good! But alas, the sound effects will
bring you back into the reality of how bad this game is.
Control
- 2/10
HORRIBLE. Choppy, unresponsive and lagging.
Fun -
2/10
I gave this a 2 instead of a 1 because it was fun to make fun of it :)
Ryu
was going through his "Carrot Top phase" when this pic was taken.
