Ah, shooters. Gotta love 'em. That theory holds true in the
case of Psychic Storm. It starts out pretty much like any other
shooter - you get your beginning intro, your selection of a couple
different fighters each with their own unique weapon. Where
Psychic Storm differs, however, is the "special" ability of each ship.
Basically, the special function of each ship can be called by hitting
the I button, or it's automatically turned on when you are close to
dying. What happens is your pilot shouts "Psychic Storm!" (in
his/her own unique voice), and your ship transforms into something much
more than what you started out with. You now get to control a
lean, mean ass-kicking machine - on a timer. Special items are
available for you to collect after you kill certain enemies which
prolongs your Psychic Storm state. When the timer runs out, you
go back to controlling your fighter.
The game is genuinely challenging, and it does take you a while to get
your weapons to full power. What I particularly like is the
Psychic Storm acts as your lives in the game - when you've used all 3
you're done. This allows for seamless play (minus load times) and
an all-round fun time.
Level design is well done - most levels are split between high altitude
and low altitude, starting off with the former. End bosses are
challenging and look pretty.
An unintentional feature that adds
replay value is the horrible Engrish used throughout the game (check
out the screenshots). A little something extra to make you smile
between levels.
Overall, the graphics are good, music
and sound FX aren't stellar, but get the job done. This is an
honestl original and great shooter. I was very impressed by this
title and it is a lot of fun to play.
Anybody
